3. What are the requirements of standard ASTM D6400 in terms of measuring compostability?- info
Standard ASTM D6400 for compostable plastics specifies three criteria.

a) Mineralisation

* At least 90% of the conversion into carbon dioxide, water and biomass should be through microbial assimilation.
* This should occur at the same speed as for natural materials (such as leaves, grass, food waste, etc).
* It should take place within a period of 180 days.

b) Disintegration

* Less than 10% of the material sample should be caught in a 2-millimetre sieve.

c) Safety

* It should not impact upon plant life, in accordance with Guideline OCDE 208.
* It should be regulated (less than 50% of the EPA limit on heavy metals).
