2. What do biodegradable and compostable mean?- info
Biodegradation occurs when micro-organisms in favourable environmental conditions are able to digest materials and use them as a source of food. It is a process that can occur in many different environments, including soil, local composting plants, water treatment works, marine environments and even in the human body. It is the process that converts carbon into energy and maintains life.

To be considered biodegradable, plastics must pass through a two-stage process:

a) The long polymeric chains are shortened until only simple carbon-carbon bonds remain. This process can be started by heat, humidity, microbial enzymes or other environmental conditions, depending on the polymer. This stage is known as "degradation" and can be observed as the plastic becomes weak and easily breakable.

b) The shorter carbon chains pass through the cell wall of micro-organisms and are used as a source of energy. Biodegradation occurs when the carbon chains are used as a source of food and are totally converted into water, biomass and carbon dioxide.
