1. What are bioplastics?- info
Bioplastics can be divided into two distinct categories:

a) Compostable plastics

Compostable plastics are certified and developed in accordance with standard ASTM D6400, using renewable resources (such as corn, cellulose, etc) and/or non-renewable fossil resources (oil). The focus of compostable plastics is on their compostability rather than the raw material they are made from. Certified compostable plastic products may contain renewable raw materials. However, there are also synthetic polymers based on fossil raw materials that are totally compostable in accordance with standard ASTM D6400.

Any plastic material labelled as compostable must past the recognised standard tests (EU: ASTM D6400). Resins and finished products must be tested by independent experts at external laboratories before being certified and labelled with the "Compostable" logo. Any products which contain polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or any other conventional plastic material should carry clear and visible information regarding their composition.

b) Plastics from renewable sources

Plastics from renewable sources are at least 50% composed of renewable materials, such as: sugar, amide, vegetable oils, cellulose, etc. The focus of plastics from renewable sources is their composition, not their compostability. Corn, potato, grains, sugar cane and wood are the most commonly used materials.

Although most plastics from renewable sources are not meant or designed to be compostable, they still aid sustainability by requiring less energy to produce and reducing dependence on oil as a raw material. ASTM D6866 methods are employed to determine the proportion of biocontent in a product or resin.
